What would you do when your bicycle has a tire puncture? Is tire patch something you are familiar with?
In some countries, people would go to a bike shop and have the staff fix the puncture for them. In other countries, people would just make the repairs on their own. Which option would you prefer?
There is nothing wrong with having someone patch the tire for you. But isn’t it a good idea to learn to do it by yourself? You will realize that patching a tire is not as hard as it appears to be. You will gain confidence once you have learned and practiced the right way to do it.
Now, the good news is, there is an easier and faster way to patch a bicycle tire. Using pre-glued and pre-cut tire patches, you can fix puncture in minutes. Super sticky tire patches are available, and they are as useful as tire glue repair kits.
Purchase a glueless tire patch kit at a bike shop or from an online store. A compact patch kit includes a tire scuffer and a number of glueless patches. Technically you will also need at least two pieces of tire lever. Follow the steps below and you would soon master the skill.
1. Remove the object that has caused the puncture.
2. Take out the inner tube with tire levers.
3. Locate the puncture. Put the tube in water and squeeze to look for bubbles if necessary.
4. Clean the area around the puncture and keep it dry. Roughen the area with tire scuffer or sandpaper. The area roughened should be larger than the glueless tire repair patch you are to apply.
5. Peel off the backing paper of the tire patch, and stick the patch onto the puncture area. Press firmly, starting from center and then all over the area, forcing out all air bubbles.
6. Make sure the patch is firmly attached. Wait at least 20 to 30 minutes before re-refitting the tube. It takes 4 hours for the adhesive to fully cure.
