One of the most annoying things in the world is that rain drop or dew finds its way into the tent through the seams while you are outdoor camping. The thing is, even a new camping tent might not be readily seam-sealed, in which case it is not fully waterproof. Water and other elements can get into the tent through needle hoes in the seam or pinholes located anywhere. For either new or used tents, you will need a seam sealer (aka seam sealant) to do the job for you.
A tent seam sealer should have excellent waterproof and seam sealing performance, durable and able to withstand high temperature. There are mainly two kinds of seam sealant for tent, one for silicone-coated nylon tent and another for polyurethane-coated tent. Make sure which kind is suitable for your tent before purchasing any product. A seam sealer is easy to apply. Follow the simple instructions to keep your tent in good condition.
Tools to have: isopropyl alcohol (to wipe the seam area clean), seam sealer (to seam seal a tent), brush (to spread seam sealer).
How to seam seal a tent?
1. For best results, wipe surface along seams with isopropyl alcohol before you start.
2. Adopt proper ventilation while applying seam sealer.
3. A typical tent seam sealer is liquid. Hold tube flat against seams. Squeeze tube gently and draw along seams.
4. Spread seam sealer evenly into stitch holes, fabric joints and pinholes (if there is any). Use a brush for better application. The seam sealer is colorless and can thus blend into its surrounding surfaces.
5. After you finish the application, allow 2~4 hours to dry.
6. Wipe the opening of the tube clean and tightly close the cap after use.
Depending on the product you choose, seam sealer can also be used in other outdoor fabrics, such as canvas, tarp, vinyl and leather.
