Silicone glue has been widely used for bonding plastics, glass and ceramics, especially in bathroom, shower and kitchen. People use it to install hooks, racks or caddies on the wall. Silicone glue has excellent adhesion and can hold objects weighing up to 6 kilograms. It sticks so well that once you decide to un-install the hooks, racks or caddies, it might be a hassle to get the glue off.
First thing to be noted: to remove glue residue requires patience since you do not want to overdo it and damage the surface. For silicone glue applied on smooth surface, scrapping might be enough to remove it.
Try a blade or a plastic scraper, some objects that are HARD and SHARP ENOUGH to scrape the glue off. This should be able to remove most of the glue residue. If you have tried scrapping and there is still residue left, some chemicals are required.
A liquid type of silicone remover is a choice for sure, but you can try something readily available in the household first, such as ethyl alcohol. Ethyl alcohol is not as effective as other solvents for dissolving silicone. You will have to apply it multiple times: brush it in, leave it for a few seconds and then wipe it off.
Organic solvents such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and methylbenzene can also be used to dissolve silicone glue. No matter what type of chemicals you choose, make sure to set up proper ventilation during use to control exposures to the solvent.
