Are you ready for the summer? People who are into outdoor adventure would be excited to head for their next destination this year. Bring a tent repair kit with you when you are out in the field. It helps you deal with rips, tears, holes and leaking on your gear. Among the tools, seam sealant is a necessity. It seals and waterproofs seams on outdoor fabrics including tents, sleeping pads and backpacks.

It is in rainy weather that tent seams are driving us crazy. To save outdoor experience from leaking and dripping, a tube of seam sealant comes to rescue. However, it should be noted that there are two types of tent coating. Tents are impregnated with either polyurethane-based coating or silicone-based coating. Polyurethane-treated fabrics should be waterproofed with polyurethane-based sealant. Silicone treated fabrics has its silicone-based sealant.

Don’t let rain stop you from next outdoor adventure. Simply apply a thin film to the inside and also the outside of the seams and let dry. Depending on formula, it cures in 4-6 hours at room temperature or it might take overnight for the sealant to cure. Below are some frequently asked questions when it comes to tent seam sealing.

How to prepare for seam sealing?

If the tent is not new, clean the seams first with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. Set up the tent and stretch out the seams flat when you are applying sealant.

Do we use seam sealant on the inside or outside of a tent?

Apply the sealant on the inside and outside if possible. Hold tube flat against seams. Squeeze tube gently and draw along seams. Seal the seams and also the area around the stitching.

Is it better to apply sealant with a brush?

Use an applicator brush to make easy and quick application. Spread seam sealant evenly into stitch holes, fabric joints and pinholes (if there is any). The seam sealant is colorless and can blend into its surrounding surfaces. When you are done, leave the tent to fully dry overnight before folding it away.

Seam sealant repairs not only tents and rainwear but also tarps and awnings. It can be used on various outdoor fabrics, including nylon, polyester and canvas. About every 2 oz tube seals a 4-person tent.
