ISO 11683 is an international standard/requirement for tactile warnings of danger on packaging. This standard has been implemented in the EU. Hazardous chemicals sold to the public must have tactile warning symbols on the packaging in accordance with this standard.
How does a tactile warning label work? It is in the form of a raised triangle or three raised dots on the packaging. The symbol works as braille to alert blind or partially visually impaired people that they are dealing with a dangerous product. Not only the size, shape and location of the tactile warning on the packaging are specified, but also the requirement applies regardless of the size of the packaging.
The standard form of a tactile triangle label is as simple as a raised equilateral triangle, with the length of side equal to 18 mm. For packages that do not have enough space for the size of 18 mm, however, a reduced size of 9 mm equilateral triangle may be used.
The following countries are bound to implement this standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
