When it comes to o-ring lubricant, silicone grease is the best choice. When one decides to reuse water filter housing o-rings, a thin layer of silicone grease is to be applied on the o-rings to keep them effective in watering sealing.

Silicone grease is a translucent white viscous paste that contains silicone oil. It is commonly used as a waterproof grease to lubricate and preserve rubber parts because it is more compatible with rubber and plastic than other types of grease.

With excellent water sealing effect, silicone grease is widely used in facets, seals, valves and can be found in drinking water filtration systems, water softener and carbon water filter. More applications involve underwater cameras, scuba gear and plug valves.

Because of incident contact with drinking water, silicone grease is often, if not always, required to reach food grade and to be approved by FDA and NSF. In general, the operating temperature of silicon grease ranges from −40 to 200 °C, although some applications might require broader temperature ranges.
