Self adhesive patch has become a more popular option for repairing inflatable articles. Applying self adhesive patch is easy and simply leaves no mess. Nonetheless, some might be concerned about whether these glueless patches work better than liquid glue.
On self adhesive patch, there is a coating of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA), which, as its name indicates, forms a bond by the application of light pressure to marry the adhesive with the surface to be repaired. The bonding is formed at molecular level. Pressure sensitive adhesive is neither liquid nor solid. It has the tendency to flow to form a bond to the surface. It also has the tendency to resist flow once pressure is applied to the bond.
There are a few factors that influence the ultimate bond strength, such as adhesive formulation, coating thickness, smoothness of surface, the amount of pressure applied and contaminants on surface. Also, temperature is an important factor for room temperature is usually preferred for optimal result.
Shin Dorn has applied pressure sensitive adhesive to a variety of self adhesive repair patches. Adhesive formulation and coating thickness can be accommodated to client’s intended use conditions.
