Have you ever wondered why inflatable articles are always so popular among boys and girls? Swimming rings, inflatable boats, air beds, pool floats…these are really great companions to kids and adults in summer! It thus makes sense that these inflatable products must comply with toy safety standards. But do you know that the repair glue to inflatable items also have to comply with relevant toy safety standards?
According to the European Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC, EN 71 standard specifies safety requirements for toys to be sold or distributed within the EU. All toys placed on the EU market have to meet the standard. EN 71 comprises 11 parts. Shin Dorn’s repair glue, a common accessory item for inflatable products, is applicable to and complies with EN 71-3.
What is EN 71-3 for? All toys likely to be licked, sucked or swallowed by a child are subject to EN 71-3 standard, which covers specification for migration of certain elements. Maximum migration limits are specified for the soluble concentrations of 19 toxic substances, such as aluminum, cadmium, lead and mercury, based upon daily permitted exposure levels.
Different limits are applied depending on the toy material category. Three distinct toy material categories are I) dry, brittle, powder-like or pliable; II) liquid or sticky; and III) scraped-off. For testing, toy material is to be extracted under conditions simulating exposure to stomach acid.
Repair glue often comes with products such as inflatable toys, inflatable pools or other inflatable articles. It is defined as toy material in category III, scraped-off toy material. Shin Dorn’s repair glue has passed testing to EN 71-3 (as well as other standards) from an accredited test house.
