Do you find your tent gets “wet” easily? While your new tent, canopy and tarp have gone through waterproof treatments before being put on the market, you will probably need to re-waterproof it as the fabric gets “old” after repeated use.  Seam sealing is to apply seam sealer and to seal the stitch holes and seams on the tent. It helps prevent rain and moisture from dripping through and keep dry inside the tent.

To adequately seal the seams, first you have to choose the right type of seam sealer. To waterproof silicone-coated nylon tents, for example, you need a silicone based seam sealer. A high quality seam sealer would do a great job to waterproof tents and all kinds of outdoor fabrics. It is also expected to be durable and to withstand high temperature.

A seam sealer is easy to apply. Follow the steps below to achieve maximum waterproofness in your silnylon tent.

  1. Make sure to use silicone seam sealer with adequate ventilation. Wipe the surface along seams clean before you start.
  2. Since the seam sealer is in liquid form, hold the tube flat against seams. Squeeze the tube gently and draw along seams.
  3. Use a brush to spread the seam sealer evenly into stitch holes, fabric joints and pinholes.
  4. As you finish, wait 2 to 4 hours for the sealer to dry.
