How does a glow-in-the-dark sticker work?

Have you ever had glow-in-the-dark stars in your bedroom? It is just like magic when kids first see it glow, isn’t it?

How does a glow-in-the-dark sticker work?Glow-in-the-dark stickers can also be of great help when it comes to home safety. They emit dim light, usually in blue-green, helping you move around in the dark without bumping into things. Now, do you know how these glowing stickers work?

These stickers contain special color powders, in which a substance absorbs light at one wavelength and re-emits light at another wavelength later. Usually the emitted light has longer wavelength and lower energy than the absorbed light. This is a process called photoluminescence that produces light using light energy instead of heat, and is ideal for making safety signs and labels.

It should be noted that there are two kinds of substances that re-emit light in the process. “Fluorescence” emits light right after absorbing light and glows for only a few minutes, while “phosphorescence” releases light for longer, even hours after the excitation has ceased. Glow-in-the-dark products use specific color powders depending on the purpose of application.
