Have you ever examined an aluminum collapsible tube in your household? What contents does it hold, cream lotion or adhesive glue? Aluminum collapsible tube is commonly used as packaging container. It prevents the contents from contact with moisture, oxygen, light, UV rays and other potential contaminants in the environment that would perish the contents. While it is well acknowledged that aluminum itself has natural resistance to corrosion, it should be noted that treatments of tube are also important in terms of enhancing the level of protection.
Internal lacquering applies plain lacquer of highly flexible epoxy-phenolic resin to the inner wall of aluminum collapsible tube. It is transparent and gives brown/golden color to the inside of tube (see image above). This special resin is resistant to chemicals, water and solvent. For products highly sensitive to moisture and oxygen, such as silicone sealant, it is suggested that internal lacquer be applied. For products that is corrosive and may react to aluminum, such as hair colorant or plastic putty, it is suggested that double layers of lacquer be applied.
In addition to playing a role as barrier, the epoxy-phenolic resin should also be non-reactive and non-toxic as it will be in constant contact with contents and has to keep the contents fresh and intact. The importance of proper lacquering in guaranteeing a long shelf life of products cannot be overestimated.
