New Requirements on PAHs for German GS Mark CertificationIn August 2014, the German Committee for Product Safety (AfPS) has determined the new requirements on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) limits for the GS Mark Certification. It is intended to align with the new REACH Annex XVII PAHs requirements in consumer products and will become effective on July 1, 2015.

Products that are covered under the scope of this requirement include electrical and electronic products, toys, plastic products, rubber products and machinery.

Here are the significant changes of the new PAHs requirements:

– The old standard, ZEK 01.4-08, only defined the limit value of one of the PAHs – BaP, and the limit value of sum of 18 PAHs. The new standard adds separate limit values for 10 PAHs and the limit value of sum of another 7 PAHs.

  • The new standard sets lower limit values of BaP in Category 2 and Category 3.
  • The new standard sets lower limit values of sum of 18 PAHs in Category 2 and Category 3.
  • The new standard newly includes materials with repeated short term skin contact in Category 2.
  • Products in Category 2 and Category 3 are divided into two new subcategories, Toys in 2009/48/EC and Other products in ProdSG.
