European standard EN 71 specifies safety requirements for toys to be sold in the European Union. All toys placed on the EU market have to meet the standard. Shin Dorn’s repair patch, a common accessory item for inflatable products, is applicable to and complies with EN 71-3, according to the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC applicable since July 20, 2013
What is EN 71-3 for? All toys likely to be licked, sucked or swallowed by a child are subject to EN 71-3 standard, which covers specification for migration of certain elements. Maximum migration limits are specified for the soluble concentrations of 19 toxic substances, such as aluminium, cadmium, lead and mercury, based upon daily permitted exposure levels.
Different limits are applied depending on the toy material category. Three distinct toy material categories are 1) dry, brittle, powder-like or pliable; 2) liquid or sticky; and 3) scraped-off. For testing, toy material is to be extracted under conditions simulating exposure to stomach acid.
Repair patch often comes with products such as inflatable toys, inflatable pools or other inflatable articles. It is defined as toy material in category III, scraped-off toy material. Shin Dorn’s repair patch has passed testing to EN 71-3 (as well as other standards) from an accredited test house.
Shin Dorn always looks closely to safety standards applicable in different markets. For more information, please contact Shin Dorn’s sales team.
